Intervista di Annalisa Varesi da Wait!Magazine n° 29

La copertina dell’ultimo numero di Wait! è stata personalizzata da Massimo Pasca. Massimo è un giovane pittore, illustratore, musicista, live painter (ma non solo…) pugliese trapiantato a Pisa. La sua arte è immediatamente riconoscibile, coloratissima, ironica e iconica, fra continui richiami all’arte classica ed uno stile inconfondibilmente contemporaneo e pop.

A. Parlaci di te. Chi è Massimo Pasca?

M. Sono Nato in Salento trentacinque anni fa. Ora  vivo da tantissimi anni a Pisa.Città nella quale  dipingo, illustro e  e canto con  i Working Vibes gruppo di cui sono il fondatore. Sono un guerriero  basso di statura che al posto della lancia ha il pennello e la penna.

A. Come sei arrivato al mondo dell’arte? Era il tuo sogno di bambino?

M. Sono figlio d’arte, anche se non ho mai frequentato scuole o accademie. Già da bambino era una delle mie principali passioni, disegnavo e ricopiavo di tutto, dalle carte da gioco ai francobolli, hello kitty e Alan ford, e poi avevo la fissa di ricopiare la Gioconda. A scuola quando facevo un disegno ottenevo il massimo dell’attenzione. E mi piaceva.

A. Qual è, nell’arte, la tua più grande ispirazione?

M. Bella domanda, credo riuscire a vivere oltre la morte che poi è un po il sogno di tutti gli artisti e quello che ci spinge a fare qualcosa che altrimenti sarebbe un lavoro come altri. Però molto piu concretamente è anche la voglia di farsi conoscere,  ogni quadro credo sia un po l’espressione migliore dell’io.Credo che ogni quadro  siamo noi filtrati dal contesto che ci circonda.

A. E l’ispirazione come diventa realtà?

M. Dipingere, creare, studiare, smontare, analizzare, liberarsi creativamente senza vincoli senza attendere i tempi della società. Questa è la mia reltà. Ogni giorno. Potermi emozionare.

A. Sei pittore, illustratore, musicista, live painter… Mi sono dimenticata qualcosa?

M. Potrei dirti anche che scrivo, concepisco video, faccio performance teatrali, e faccio il dj….ma sono tutti esperimenti fatti bene e in maniera seria per “capire” meglio il mondo che andrò a rappresentare. L’arte è un po un cane che si morde la coda . Penso che nel Rinascimento mi sarei trovato bene.

A. Puoi scegliere un enorme muro, in una qualunque città del mondo e farne ciò che vuoi…

M. Fantastico. Scelgo la campagna salentina. Mentre sei in giro tra gli uliveti secolari che affondano le radici nella terra rossa,a un certo punto, nel silenzio della campagna, compare un muro. Lo osservo e lo corteggio, e solo in seguito inizio a dipingerlo. Fitto di segni, di significati a colori, magari un grosso drago e forse un misto tra una lucertola e un mostro sacro. Una sorta di divinità pagana che comunica bellezza e superstizione.

A. E’ difficile fare l’artista oggi? Cosa diresti ad un giovane che sta muovendo i primi passi in questo mondo?

M. Se sei mosso dalla passione nulla è difficile, può essere difficile essere anche uomo oltre che artista, perchè devi anche vivere,mangiare, socializzare, e questo diventa un po difficile se dai tutte le tue giornate all’arte. A volte penso seriamente che l’arte crea un mondo intorno a me che vedo solo io, e quando ne esco iniziano le difficoltà. Il consiglo che darei è di dare importanza agli istanti più che ai minuti o alle ore. Cosa voglio dire? Che un artista lavora tanto per avere brevi attimi di felicità, che però sono intensi e non misurabili. Sono sensazioni fortissime, difficilmente spiegabili a parole.

A. Come ti vedi da qui a 10 anni?

M. Onestamente non riesco ad immaginarmi. C’è chi crede che sarò un famoso pittore perciò oggi compra le mie tele, c’è chi mi immagina morto ( la vecchia storia dove l’artista muore e le quotazioni salgono), c’è chi mi vorrebbe vedere “sistemato”, in tutti sensi, economico, sociale, estetico. E poi ci sono io che se proprio devo immaginarmi mi vedo in un sogno: io che cammino in una città colorata, sul mare con le strade leggermente in discesa, dove da aprile in poi c’è bel tempo,  dove gli anziani mi insegnamno a vivere e i bambini a sognare ancora. Ma parlavamo di un sogno.

A. C’è un sogno ancora chiuso nel cassetto?

M. Da buon surrealista sogno ad occhi aperti. Se  chiudi un sogno in un cassetto vuol dire che vuoi realizzarlo, costringelo in un certo senso. Io lo lascio libero di volare, sperando che torni da me.

A. Infine, domanda classica, se ti diciamo “Wait!” cosa ci rispondi?

M. Ti rispondo con la forza della poesia di  Bob Marley: I don’t wanna wait in vain for your love!!!

The latest cover of Wait! has been customized by Massimo Pasca. Massimo is a young painter, illustrator, musician, live painter (but not only …) born in Puglia transplanted in Pisa. His art is instantly recognizable, colorful, ironic and iconic, including repeated references to classical art and style that is unmistakably contemporary and pop.

A. Tell us about yourself. Who is Massimo Pasca?

M. I was born in Salento thirtyfive years ago. Now I’m living in Pisa. City in which I paint, illustrate and singing with the “Working Vibes”. I am a warrior of low stature that instead of the spear has a brush and a pen.

A. How did you come to the world of art? It was your childhood dream?

M. I am an “art’s son”, but inspite of that I never attended schools or academies. When I was a child art was my main passions. I drow everything from playing cards to stamps, Hallo Kitty and Alan Ford. At school with my drawings I could get the attention of the people. And I liked it.

A. What is your biggest inspiration?

M. Good question. Living forever is a little dream of all artists. But much more concrete the desire to be known. I think every picture is a little expression of the ego.

A. And how the inspiration becomes true?

M. Paint, create, investigate, disassemble, analyze, free creatively without the constraints of waiting the society’s time. This is my straight line. Every day. I could move.

A. You are a painter,  an illustrator,  a musician … I forgot something?

M. I could also tell you that I write, I make videos, do theatrical performances and  I’m a DJ… But they are all experiment done to “understand” better the world I’m going to represent. Art it’s like a dog chasing its tail. I think I would have been good in the Renaissance.

A. You can choose a huge wall in any city or place in the world and do what you want …

M. Fantastic. I choose the country of Salento. While you’re out among the olive trees rooted in the red earth at some point in the silence of the countryside, you can see a wall. I watch him and courted him, and only later began to paint. Full of signs, meanings of color, maybe a big dragon and maybe a cross between a lizard and a sacred monster. A sort of pagan gods that communicates beauty and superstition.

A. It ‘hard to be an artist today? What would you say to a young man who is taking its first steps in this world?

M. If you have passion nothing is difficult. But it’s  harder to be a man than artist, because you must also live, eat, socialize, and this becomes a bit difficult if you give all your days  to art. Sometimes I think seriously that art creates a world around me, and when I go out the difficulties begin. TTo a young artist I could say to give importance to the moment rather than the minutes or hours. What do I mean? An artist works for shorts moments of happiness, but they are intense and not measurable. Feelings are very strong, difficult to explain in words.

A. How do you see yourself 10 years from now?

M. Honestly I can not imagine. Some people think that I’ll be a famous painter therefore now buy my paintings. Some people imagine me dead (the old story that where the artist died and prices go up), some people would see me “settled” in all senses, economic, social, aesthetic. And then there’s me that if I have to imagine I see myself in a dream that I walk into a colorful city on the sea by road slightly downhill, where from April onwards the weather is fine, where older people to teach me live and children to dream again. But I’m speaking of a dream…

A. There is still a dream in the drawer closed?

M. As a good surrealist I’m a permanent daydream. If you close a dreamin a drawer means that you can’t realize that.

A. Finally, our classic question, if I say  to you “Wait!” What is your answer?

M. I answer with the power of poetry by Bob Marley: “I do not want to wait in vain for your love!”
